The BoardWalk team wishes you and yours a

season filled with gratitude, and we thank you for
the
gift of support and encouragement you gave our
work throughout 2004. Sam Pettway and Margaret C. Reiser
Hands On Network (formerly CityCares) is the parent
of some 44 community-based "Hands On" groups
across the US and in a growing number of other
countries.
This year, the Hands On Network
leveraged the
talents of over 350,000 volunteers working on
hundreds of
individual projects. A President's Council
chaired by Home Depot CEO Robert Nardelli has
committed to increasing the number of active
volunteers to at least
600,000 by the end of 2006 while increasing
significantly the number of corporate-sponsored
volunteer programs. Clearly, the network is meeting its goal of "transforming people and communities through volunteer services and civic engagement." To support these ambitions, the Network's governing board seeks 3-4 new board members who combine entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated commitment to volunteerism with senior management experience in an organization of substantial scope and scale. BoardWalk Consulting has been retained to assist the organization in its board development. To learn more about board opportunities at Hands On Network, please click here. "Has Your Organization Outgrown Its
Board?"
This is the question posed by BoardWalk's Sam
Pettway in the next issue of BoardMember,
BoardSource's monthly governance publication. "The
really tough issues in board governance are not
the ones involving the mystical Messrs. Sarbanes,
Oxley or Spitzer," says Pettway, "nor even the tax
gurus in the US
Senate or at the IRS. Rather, the really tough issues
in board governance are the ones involving the
people you know best-your own board members.
"Stagnation, bloat, frustration, micromanagement,
spotty giving, or falling meeting attendance--all may
be signs of a board that has outlived its
relevance." If your board has ever exhibited any of
these symptoms, you will want to download the
preview article below. For a preview copy of "Has Your Organization Outgrown Its Board?," please click here. [Sarbanes-Oxley does have serious implications for nonprofit governance. Last year BoardSource and Independent Sector published an overview of those implications. For your copy of the relevant summary, please click here.]
