Is there one in your future?

At BoardWalk, we've long been fans of encore careers, wherein executives who have enjoyed success and achievement in the for-profit sector find meaning, fulfillment and joy in new not-for-profit careers.  After all, three of our principals--Sam Pettway, Margaret Reiser and Kathy Bremer--actively chose to devote themselves to our clients' mission-centered work after success in the for-profit world.

With the recruitment of Brian Leary as CEO of Atlanta BeltLine (see article below), we have now completed fully sixteen placements in the last several years that fit the category of encore careers.  Now serving as CEOs, CFOs, Chief Marketing Officers and the like of nonprofits with footprints ranging from purely local to truly global, these executives came from backgrounds as diverse as the missions they now serve.  For example,

These encore careerists and a dozen others--BoardWalk recruitments all--share with their more traditional nonprofit counterparts a genuine commitment to service, coupled with the joy of discovery as they leverage their talents in a new context.

Baby boomers and nonprofits alike are increasingly alert to the extraordinary potential available through encore careers, and yet the pitfalls and potholes are very real.  As in so many other situations, culture trumps competence, and the culture shift inherent in encore careers can be daunting indeed.

An encore careerist is not ideal for every client, nor is an encore career right for every executive.  When it works, however, the benefits can be enormous.  If the concept appeals to you, we'd welcome a chance to discuss our own encore careers and how our perspective might inform your journey or that of the nonprofit you represent. Drop us an email, and we'll respond with additional information of.interest.

Deadline extended to October 15
for
BoardWalk Governance Fellowships
at
Harvard Business School
December 9-12, 2009

For the sixth year, we are pleased to invest in nonprofit board governance by offering up to six fellowships to a compelling course at Harvard Business School, "Governing for Nonprofit Excellence: Critical Issues for Board Leadership."

Joining 29 previous BoardWalk Governance Fellows, this year's group will experience first-hand a program of which other participants have called "Transformational," "excellent preparation for expanded duties," and "a terrific use of my time."

BoardWalk will fund half the cost of the Fellowships (which includes room and board in Harvard's executive residences); participants are responsible for the other half.  Our eligibility requirements are quite straightforward.

In respect of the economic challenges facing most nonprofits, we've extended our deadline for application to October 15.  The new class of Fellows will be announced in our next smorgasBoard
