Recent placements on the BoardWalk ... announced since our last smorgasBoard:
On January 5, 2009, Charlie Shaffer will become Vice President for Institutional Advancement for The Westminster Schools.
For many years a partner at King & Spalding, Charlie recently completed four years as President & CEO of the Marcus Institute, a nonprofit offering comprehensive diagnosis and therapy for children with developmental disabilities and autism-related disorders. A long-time volunteer for many causes, he was one of three co-chairs of the University of North Carolina's $2-billion capital campaign, which concluded last year having raised $300 million more than originally targeted. Charlie received his law and undergraduate degrees from UNC, and he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. |

From other friends in the Sector:
Ten Commandments for Foundation Board Members:
I. Thou shalt not forget that it is not thy money.
II. Thou shalt not be arrogant.
III. Thou shalt not confuse thy foundation's importance with thy personal wealth.
IV.... These and other gems await you in Notes from an Unprofitable Life: Reflections on my Journey across America's Charitable Landscape, by Martin Lehfeldt. A dear friend since BoardWalk's first days, Martin retired earlier this year as president of the Southeastern Council of Foundations and has been using the time since to complete this wonderful collection of musings from his 43 years of service to the sector. If you know Martin, you will find his Notes typically full of grace, candor and common sense.
