Nominations invited for the Fifth Annual BoardWalk Governance Fellowships to Harvard Business School December 3-6, 2008
Preliminary applications due August 11, 2008
Once again, BoardWalk is pleased to support excellence in nonprofit board leadership by offering up to six fellowships that will allow a select group of nonprofit trustees to attend a compelling short course at Harvard Business School on "Governing for Nonprofit Excellence."
Recipients typically range from senior board members of national nonprofits with nine-figure budgets to chairs of local agencies a fraction that size--diversity of viewpoints, experiences and platforms is fundamental to the program's value. All recipients share a personal commitment to service, personal growth and excellence in nonprofit governance.The deadline for preliminary expressions of interest is August 11, 2008. Recent placements on the BoardWalk
We are pleased to have advised the following clients on these recent appointments:
Steve Denne, formerly a senior executive with American Red Cross in Washington D.C., will join Heifer International as Chief Operating Officer in September.
Over his ARC career, Steve held program, fundraising and operational leadership roles at a $3-billion organization with 800 affiliate offices. Known for building strong teams and building bridges across the organization, Steve recently led enterprise-wide transformation of the Red Cross fundraising model. In an earlier role heading Health and Safety Services Operations, Steve led the program from a decade of flat enrollment and revenue to double-digit nationwide growth
Steve earned his MBA at Yale University and his BA in Economics and English at Denison University. He is a competitive rower, a demanding endeavor that he describes as the perfect team sport.
Donna Buchanan has joined the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta as COO. Until last month, Donna was President of Junior Achievement of Georgia, serving nearly 100,000 K-12 students through six regional offices. In 2004, Donna received Junior Achievement's highest national award, the Charles R. Hook Award, for "superior results in promoting the growth and development of Junior Achievement."
Donna started her Junior Achievement career in New Orleans in 1979. After nine years progressing through various regional and national roles in development, she joined Jack Morton Productions, a privately held, $100mm communications company, rising to VP and General Manager. She was appointed president of Junior Achievement of Georgia in 1993.
Donna earned her BA in English at Georgia State University.
The Atlanta Union Mission Board of Directors has selected Jim Reese as the new president and CEO of the Atlanta Union Mission. Jim Reese succeeds Interim CEO Jay Cory, who has just been named executive vice president.
Previously, Jim was president and chief operating officer of CCCi (formerly Comprehensive Computer Consulting) in Atlanta. He was CEO of RANDSTAD North America from 2001-2005. Earlier, he held senior-level positions with The HoneyBaked Ham Company and the Frito Lay Division of PepsiCo. As CEO of RANDSTAD North America, the fourth largest staffing company in the world, Reese was responsible for $1.7 billion in revenue for the U.S., Canada, and United Kingdom. He was the first non-Dutch member of the Executive Board for RANDSTAD.
Jim earned his BBA in Marketing and General Business at Western Michigan University. He is chairman of the elders for Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia.
Madelyn Adams has just been named executive director at East Lake Foundation, nationally known for its holistic approach to community revitalization. Before joining East Lake, Madelyn was the Vice President of Administration & Diversity at the Atlanta Journal- Constitution (AJC). At the AJC, Madelyn was responsible for Community Affairs, a role which led to board service with the Alliance Theater; Imagine It Children's Museum; Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) Foundation; and, the Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter of the Red Cross.
Her most heartfelt engagement has been with the Children's Museum where she most recently served as Chair of the board. During her tenure she helped raise over $1 million and, she is proud to report that during her tenure as chair the Museum ended its fiscal year in the black for the first time. She was also one of the founding board members of TechBridge.
Previously, Madelyn was Director of Media and Marketing for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and a Marketing Manager for Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in Los Angeles
Madelyn earned an MBA in Marketing at The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Political Science at Duke University.

Jasmine Haynie Research Associate
We are pleased to report that Jasmine Haynie has joined the BoardWalk team as a Research Associate. Jasmine will support the firm's candidate-facing activities and help develop profiles on organizations and executives relevant to our various consulting engagements.
An Atlanta-area native, Jasmine earned her BA. in Psychology from Spelman College and her MA in Organizational Management from George Washington University.
Outside of the work world, Jasmine is an avid traveler and black-&-white photographer. Welcome, Jasmine!
... and farewell and thanks to Ami Thaker
 In August, we bid fond farewell to Ami Thaker, BoardWalk's Marketing and Communications Associate, as she leaves us to commence full-time study for her Masters in Public Health at Emory University.
During her short while with us, Ami played an outsized role in focusing our marketing and communications efforts while lending major project support to a large engagement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC). The de facto editor of smorgasBoard during her time here, Ami also tended to our website and our business development activities.
A summa cum laude graduate of Georgia State, Ami looks forward to a career in public health. We look forward to following your successes for years to come!
