An update on our Board Governance Fellowships, a BoardChampion by way of Katrina, three senior appointments and one new client are the subjects of this month's smorgasBoard.
August 29, 2006
Update on BoardWalk's 3rd Annual Governance Fellowships at
Harvard Business School In recent newsletters, we alerted you to our Third
Annual BoardWalk Governance Fellowships at Harvard
Business School, a program we sponsor each fall to
celebrate and extend the good work being done by
nonprofit board members.
As of this morning, fully 443 readers had
downloaded our preliminary application! We are
thrilled by this level of interest in a governance
seminar for nonprofit trustees, even as we are bracing
for the difficult task of selecting just six of them to
receive a fellowship.
Watch September's smorgasBoard for details on the
recipients. And special thanks to those who
expressed interest in the initiative. We just wish
we had the funds to send all of you to
Harvard....
Ford Foundation's Linetta Gilbert our BoardChampionSM of the Month
One year ago today, Hurricane Katrina changed lives
and perspectives all over the country. It was
because of Katrina that we met Linetta J. Gilbert, a
quiet but highly pervasive force in community
development and community philanthropy throughout
the US. For her pivotal role in forming the
Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation and for
the organization's tireless efforts to restore hope
and community in the kidst of devastation, we are
pleased to name Linetta as our BoardChampion of the
Month for August 2006.
This self-effacing program officer and former New
Orleans resident helped attract (and sometimes
cajole!) board members, expertise and financial
support from a variety of organizations, including
an impressive list of the country's most visible
foundations--as well as from individual entities with no
prior involvement in Louisiana, such as BoardWalk
Consulting.
BoardWalk's Sam Pettway had the privilege of working
with the LDRF board in its selection of Sherece West
as Executive Director.

Regional educational foundation lands senior advocate from Washington
The Southern
Education Foundation (SEF) is a public charity
committed to advancing fairness and excellence in
education. A small organization with a huge
mission, SEF seeks to improve educational excellence
and equity across the deep South.
In recruiting Andrea Young as Senior Program
Officer, SEF has landed an experienced public policy
advocate steeped in politics and social engagement
and long-committed to the educational challenges,
issues and experiences of underserved or overlooked
segments of society. This Atlanta native has spent
the last 24 years in a variety of advocacy roles in
New York and Chicago, since 1999 as VP of the National Black Child
Development Institute & Project Director for
SPARK-DC, a program working to improve the quality
and coordination of early childhood programs and
services.
BoardWalk's Kim Anderson was the lead consultant
on the SEF engagement, supported by Research
