January smorgasBoard: BoardWalk's monthly enewsletter

Our January smorgasBoard features comments and pictures from our recent visit to New Orleans, a new CEO appointment in Louisiana, an article on succession planning, a book on meeting management, and info on five new executive searches at BoardWalk, three of them national in scope, one regional and one local.

"Thank you, Jesus, for the problems I've got."
Earlier this month, BoardWalk's Sam Pettway traveled to Louisiana as part of a group of philanthropic and charitable executives from across the country assembled in support of the disaster relief efforts being spearheaded by the new Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation.
Sam was so smitten by what he saw that he returned with his two sons the following week for a similar tour, expanded to include the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.
His take-away? You cannot begin to appreciate the impact of the disaster until you've seen it with your own eyes....
Sherece West
New Louisiana foundation names Sherece West CEO
The recently formed Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, "Louisiana's Fund for Louisiana's People" has named Sherece West, formerly the president of The Carrier Foundation, as its first CEO. BoardWalk is pleased to have advised the LDRF search committee on the search and the selection.
Sherece combines strong academic grounding in public policy (she'll receive her PhD. in May 2006) with some 13 years with the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Rebuilding Communities Initiative. Her commitment to community development, her experience in grantmaking and her passion for Louisiana make her exceptionally well suited for LDRF.
LDRF was the organizer of the New Orleans visit described in the first article above. Early support of an enviable list of leading foundations nationwide has ensured that every dollar contributed from this point will go to the recovery effort.
Successful succession planning
In several recent issues, the Chronicle of Philanthropy has run a series of articles on leadership transition. We thought the recent piece on succession planning important enough to highlight here:

Planning Successful Successions

by Holly Hall

Preparing for a leader's departure can prevent problems Mark Aubel has spent the past quarter century running Once Upon a Time, a dance school and arts program for young people in Queens, N.Y., that was founded by his wife, a former ballerina.

At age 58, Mr. Aubel says he is eager to move into a new role and allow a new executive director to take over the day-to-day business operations. That would free him to do what he cares about most: teaching kids with the talent and drive to become professional dancers.

"It takes a minimum of eight years, six days a week, 52 weeks a year to make a dancer," says Mr. Aubel. Unfortunately, it may take just as long for Once Upon a Time to find his successor.

Masterful Meetings

The Secrets to Masterful Meetings
Michael Wilkinson

One of the more popular features of the Resources section of our website is entitled "Books & other readings we wouldn't be without." Michael Wilkinson's latest home run, "The Secrets to Masterful Meetings," is our latest addition.

Nonprofit executives and board members have way too much experience with bad meetings. In this highly pragmatic book, Wilkinson, a facilitator we hold in great regard, eliminates all the excuses you've ever heard (or made!) about the lousy meetings you've endured.

By the time you've finished this easily accessible work, you'll be ordering copies for every board you're on and every manager you know.

The downside? You'll have to think up new excuses for why your own meetings are so dull and dysfunctional!
